It seems that every year, when the new church year rolls around, I am looking for fresh activities for my kids to do. I have most of the same church kids on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings (small rural church problems), and although the lessons aren't the same, I feel the need to make them two very different experiences.
Sunday mornings are a little more structured, while Wednesday nights are more fun and laid-back. If you find yourself a similar situation, I'm going to share a couple of ideas that I absolutely love and plan to try in my class this year. If you try them, let me know what you like and works for you!
I really love this first idea for my Wednesday night class do before we start our lesson. Sometimes we have new kids, but even if we don't, I still think it would be a fun way for the kids to get to know a little more about each other (and help me get to know them better).
I will change some of the prompts, but you can find this particular one on Etsy.
This is a similar one.
My kids absolutely love games, and who doesn't like a little game of "Would You Rather"?!
I love to hear the reasoning behind the choices they make.
This could also be adjusted to a review for your lesson.
This next activity would be particularly beneficial for my Sunday School kids, as they are part of a close-knit group. I think it would be a great way not only to lift themselves and their friends up in prayer, but also to practice praying out loud. If there is someone who is shy about saying their prayer out loud, I wouldn't shame them, but encourage them to say it silently in their head.
All you need is a cheap ball from the dollar store, a permanent marker, and a list of prayer prompts.
You write the prayer prompts on the ball and voila, you've got a prayer ball. Now to start off you tell the kids to throw the ball up in the air and whatever their right thumb lands on, is the prayer that they pray.
Here is a list of prayer topics:
Freedom from Fear
Good Sibling Relationships
Trust God
Comfort in Sadness
Safety and Protection
World Leaders
Honor Your Parents
Strong Friendships
Family
Pastor of our Church
To Always Tell the Truth
School Teacher
Bullies
Respect Those in Authority
Make Wise Decisions
This is the last one I will post about. I would probably use this one for my Wednesday night group, but you may be able to use it on Sunday morning.
Of course, you could make your own list, but a scavenger hunt sounds like loads of fun!!
I truly hope these ideas help you! I can't wait to have a fantastic year with my kiddos!!
Much Love,
Beth
