As promised, I come to you today with: DESSERTS! There's just something about summer cookouts that makes everybody suddenly save room for dessert. Maybe it's the smell of burgers on the grill, kids running through the yard, or the fact that somebody always says, "I couldn't eat another bite," right before grabbing a plate of banana pudding.
The Classics We All Secretly Hope Somebody Brings
Let's start with the obvious heroes of the cookout dessert world. Banana pudding? Absolutely. Brownies cut into uneven squares because someone couldn't wait? Necessary. A big tray of cookies that have melted just enough in the heat to somehow taste even better? Perfection.
And then there is watermelon. Listen, technically it's a fruit, but at a cookout, it absolutely counts as a dessert! Especially when it's ice cold and dripping down your arm while you stand around talking to people you may only see a few times a year.
Desserts That Feel Like Summer
Summer desserts just hit different. Think strawberry shortcake, peach cobbler, lemon bars, fruit pizza, or anything involving whipped topping and a disposable aluminum pan. If it can sit on a folding table beside a crockpot of baked beans, it belongs.
And the one that I am personally crowning queen of nostalgia: Homemade ice cream! Vanilla is great, but have you tried Dr. Pepper or Peach? The possibilities are endless! The process seems super slow when you're a kid and have been promised this deliciousness all day long!
And don't overlook patriotic desserts if your cookout lands around Memorial Day or the Fourth of July. Red, white, and blue treats somehow make people feel extra festive, even if it's just cupcakes in ice cream cones with suspiciously bright frosting.
The "Grandma Brought This" Category
Every cookout has one dessert that makes everybody stop and say, "Who made this?" usually it's a homemade pie, cobbler, or cake carried in like royalty. You know the one --the dessert people politely cut into small pieces of at first and then sneak back for seconds when nobody is watching.
Keep It Simple
Here's the truth: nobody at a summer cookout is expecting bakery-level perfection. They just want something sweet after a plate piled way too high with cheeseburgers, hot dogs, ribs, and pasta salad.
So if you're planning a cookout this summer, don't overthink the dessert table. Mix in a few classics, something fruity, maybe a nostalgic favorite and call it good. Because half the fun isn't even the dessert--it's standing around the table saying, "Okay I really shouldn't...but just a little piece."
And then just a little piece turns into trying three desserts and heading home perfectly happy about it!
Much Love,
Beth
